Resources - Secondary Assessment

Key Stage 3

Listen to the sound clips and make notes about the condition of the casualty. You should match your notes against a SAMPLE assessment.

You can get the transcripts of the recordings below.

I suffer with angina and I had an attack before lunch. At first I thought I had forgotten to take my morning asprin, but on checking my medicine pot, I could see I had taken it. I thought I'd rest while I eat my sandwiches, but
it has not eased. It is like someone is sitting on my chest and the pain is going from my chest up into my neck. My arm feels strange, a bit like pins and needles going to my fingers. I have survived allergic reactions to nuts,
but I feel like this could be my time to die.
It really silly really. I went to walk off my lunch down to the beach front and on the way I came across a number of bees. I have really bad fear of bees, as I got stung as child. I had a really bad reaction and ended up in hospital.
However I have no medication. Anyway, I panicked and ran away from the bees. Should have seen me, like a mad thing. The ground was really uneven and my foot went over in a bit of hole. I didn't hear anything snap and I can
still move it, but it was probably the worst pain I have ever had and I felt like I wanted to pass out. The pain has eased now; it was probably a 4, whereas it was an 8. Does it look a bit bruised to you? How can I get home?
I do not think I can walk, it hurts to put weight on it.
What happened? Why am I on the floor? I was standing up a few seconds ago. I feel really light-headed, weak and pale. I've not been ill before and I'm not allergic to anything. Why am I down here, I just want to stand up.
Ok,
maybe not, that does not feel good, like I want to pass out again. I have not got time for this, today has been really busy. It did not help that I was late getting up, I didn't have any time for any food. I have felt hungry
for a while. I need to get going, I will be late again, oh but standing up does not feel good.

Key Stage 2

Activity 1

Ask your child to listen to the sound clips and to make notes of what is wrong with the casualty. Help them to match what they hear to SAMPLE.

After they have listened and made notes, ask your child to feedback to you ask if you were the paramedic. You only need to hear the facts as per SAMPLE and not the story of what happened.

Activity 2

For this activity, you will need:

  • doll or teddy bear
  • 1p coins with tape or small bits of masking tape with lines drawn on it with a red pen.
    These will represent injuries.

What you use will depend on the size of your toy. You will need to prep this while your child is not around.

Tape the coins or stick the little bits of masking tape on parts of toys body, under the clothes.

Give your child the toy, telling them they are unresponsive and are probably injured. Ask your child to find out if they have any injuries.

They should check the body from the head down to the feet.

Ask the child how many injuries they found and compare this to how many items you stuck on the toy.
